Mnemba Atoll Tour is a sea safari excursion is a great day out, not to be missed.

It includes world class snorkeling at the famous Mnemba Island reef, a marine conservation area, followed by a scrumptious seafood barbecue on the idyllic Muyuni beach.

Mnemba island is 3.2 km/ 2 miles off the northeast coast of Zanzibar island (Unguja). You reach Mnemba Island reef by boat, mainly from Nungwi (Ras Nungwi ) – a fishing village and dhow building center which is a 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Stone Town.

It takes about 40 minutes to reach the Mnemba Island reef snorkeling spot from Nungwi. Mnemba Island is a privately owned island with access restricted to guests of the luxurious Mnemba Island resort.

We drop you off directly at the Mnemba Island reef, which lies a few hundred yards from Mnemba Island. Mnemba Island reef is a Marine Conservation area, where you can admire corals and tropical fish that many of us have only seen in an aquarium, sea turtles and dolphins.

Diving at Mnemba is stunning, on the inside it’s like being in a giant aquarium and the outside offers excellent wall and drift dives. The surrounding waters and area around Mnemba Island are an important breeding ground for Green Turtles while a host of migratory wading birds use the island as a secure roost.

The fragile coral reef eco-systems support countless fish species and microorganisms while gigantic Whale Sharks, Humpback Whales and dolphins frequent the deeper waters.

What makes Mnemba Atoll different to diving from town is the amount of schooling fish, from Striped Snapper, Surgeon Fish and up to ten green Turtles can be seen on one dive.

If you look hard enough you will find the masters of disguise the Frog Fish who camouflage themselves so that they are not seen by predators.

The depth of the water is the same in all the reef area (6 -16 feet/ 2 – 4 meters). On the sea bed, look our for blue starfish, red-knobbed starfish or the fearsome crown-of-thorns starfish, a poisonous, coral-eating species. Green turtles can occasionally be seen at this spot.

Kizimkazi Dolphin Tour offers you the experience of a lifetime, a chance to swim with dolphins in their natural habitat. The seashore of the fishing village Kizimkazi is the home of several pods of humpback and bottlenose dolphins. The dolphins are officially protected by the 420 km2 Menai Bay Conservation Area, which was set up in 1997 to stop the rapid depletion of fish stocks. We will depart from the shores of Kizimkazi fishing village in search of dolphins. Snorkeling gear is available for you. The boat will take you out into the clear turqoise blue Indian Ocean where the odds of meetings dolphins are about 80%.

We give contribution to the protection of dolphins in the waters of Kizimkazi. We encourage our skippers not to chase the dolphins and we advise visitors to enter the water away from the dolphins with as little disturbance as possible, staying close to the boat, avoiding sudden movement and allowing the dolphins to come to you. On busy days with many tourists this however is not possible. After the exhilarating experience of swimming with the dolphins, you can also do snorkeling for a while before we will head back to shore. The trip takes about 4 hours starting very early in the morning.

When touring Zanzibar with Swahili Tribe Tours, you will learn about its rich history and culture and the many oppositions that were battled to gain or retain control of this beautiful island. The fact that it was a strategic point for trade is only one of the reasons why it was so coveted. Visit the spice and fruit farms of Zanzibar and you will understand its true value. This island is a veritable treasure trove of spices that were worth more than currency, sometimes bartered traded. Even as your knowledgeable guide talks to you about the many uses of spices aside from being used as food flavoring, you will understand that these spices have curative properties that were invaluable in the olden days, in the absence of modern medicine. The ancients also used them as coloring for fabrics and revered them in their religious rites. The time you spend in the spice plantations is a delightful experience that is no doubt enlightening but also introduces you to distinct species of fauna whose presence is necessary for the plants to flourish. For instance, as you view the vanilla plant, your guide will inform you that in the wild, monkeys pollinate it because its flowers are poisonous to many insects. You will also learn that the vanilla is a cousin of the orchid flower, and the gardeners of the farm pollinate these plants by hand and scatter coconut shells at their base to provide moisture and nutrition. You will also discover avocado trees and aloe vera plants; and an interesting fact. Mothers use the paste of the aloe vera to wean their babies off breast milk. You will also learn about natural cosmetics such as the lipstick plant that women use to lend an organic red color to their lips. So you see, the ancients had cosmetics too. The seeds of this plant are pounded and used to dye fabrics too. The coloring made from the henna plant is another beauty product that is used to paint temporary tattoos on women’s hands and feet for celebrations like weddings, engagements, maulid, eid and more.

As a coffee lover, you will enjoy viewing the fresh coffee beans in their natural form. If you have tried the coastal kahawa coffee while traveling in East Africa, you now know of one of the locations where they are sourced from. During your tour, you can also discover the different colors of the peppercorns. These vibrant colors indicate the various stages of maturity of the corns. But, be careful as you taste one, this one has kick sharper than any of the ones you have back home. And watch out for the leaves of the cayenne pepper plant. Those are quite potent too. At every turn in this spice Eden, you will encounter a new wonder. And the highlight of your spice excursion in Zanzibar is certainly the introduction to the emperor of spices, the clove. View them in their immature form and you will see a delicate spice with a light, fun aroma that is downright fascinating as is the knowledge that in the 1800s, the island produced 90% of the world’s cloves. Apart from flavoring food, they have a very impressive range of uses such as additives in tooth care products and bad breathe neutralizer. But, of course, the ancients have known about that since centuries. The empress of spices, cinnamon, is another member of the royalty you can meet when on your holiday in Zanzibar with Swahili Tribe Tours. This elegant spice is the bark of a tree that can be used entirely, from its leaves to seeds and roots. When cut, its bark curls itself into rolls as it dries, and possibly the most wondrous property it has is that it can cure cold by simply sniffing on it. This spice can also cure digestive and breathing problems besides lending a lovely aroma to food.

The lemongrass is another familiar plant you will see on your spice tour of Zanzibar, along with the starfruit and its cousin, the carambola that is actually a vegetable rather than a fruit. In case you did not know, the cardamom tree grows pods both above and below the ground. What’s more, there are both male and female trees with only the females producing seed pods. As you get distracted by the sight of the avian life, your Swahili Tribe Tours guide will direct your attention to the ginger plant. Learn of its decongestant, blood circulatory and aphrodisiacal properties as you view another root that is similar in appearance, the turmeric. Not only does it lend that lovely yellow color to curries and gravies but it acts as a healing agent. And can cure acne and yellow fever. Discover a natural sun tanning lotion on your trip in Africa that can also remedy wounds. It is the miraculous iodine plant whose sap is applied on cuts and scratches to heal them quickly. The nutmeg is another spice that is favored by Zanzibarians for its taste and a distinctive property that lends a party feeling to food thanks to its mildly hallucinogenic and aphrodisiac effects that favor romance. If you see vervet monkeys chattering excitedly, you will know they have found their favorite fruit, the shoki-shoki or rambutan that is very much like the lychee. Also try many other succulent fruits whose taste will remain with you long after you return home from your beach vacation in Tanzania. Try organic papayas, jackfruit (fenesi), mangoes, pineapples, banana, watermelons, oranges with its green peel, custard apples, passion fruits, durians and many more. End your tour day with a demonstration of how coconuts are harvested by hand from the trees. Watching the technique of young men shimmying up the slim trees is a fascinating experience, culminating in the taste of sweet water and tender coconut flesh. Shop for the unique products that are made of the spices along with hats, purses and other items crafted out of palm fronds.

Despite its weighty history, Changuu Island is less than 1km in length and only around 230m wide. The island lies just 30 minutes’ by boat from Stone Town, and has plenty to offer the day visitor – from history to wildlife to simple beach relaxation.

Changuu Island is more commonly known these days as Prison Island, a reflection of its use in the 19th century. In 1860 the island was given to two Arabs who used it as a base to hold ‘difficult’ slaves before they were sold in the slave market in Stone Town, or sent abroad. Thirty years later, when it came under British ownership, the plan was to use it as an official prison for the African mainland, but although a prison was built, it never fulfilled its purpose. The island later had a brief spell as a quarantine station for yellow fever, before being opened up to tourists.

The 30-minute boat ride from Stone Town soon leaves behind the narrow streets of the old city, bringing you to the shores of one of Africa’s more notorious islands.

Once on Changuu Island, your guide will explain the colourful history of the area, including the prison building – which still stands. Today the island is home to some of Zanzibar’s oldest residents – descendants of the Aldabra giant tortoises that were a gift to the people of Zanzibar from the Seychelles government; some of them are rumoured to have reached over a hundred years old. Look a little harder and you may also spot butterflies, bats and even the very shy duiker.

The island is fringed with coral reefs and your guide will make sure you have snorkelling equipment so you can potter around in the shallows, marvelling at the colourful marine life, or simply soak up the sun on the soft sands surrounding the island.

The Jozani Forest is a conservation area established in the 1960s in the core of Zanzibar Island. Covering an area of 50 square kilometers, this reserve also includes a section of the Jozani Chwaka National Park and was set up for the conservation of the kirk’s red colobus monkey, a beautiful and rare primate. Subsisting on leaves and living most of their lives in the trees and bushes, evolution has more or less eliminated their opposable thumbs so they now have only a stub left. As you go primate viewing on your exploratory vacation in Zanzibar, you will be delighted to watch these lively creatures in their natural habitat as they feed, groom one another and care for their young. They are used to seeing humans around and will forage close to you allowing you to take lots of pictures. Learn more about their behavior from the Swahili Tribe Tours guide accompanying you and also about the dedicated efforts that were directed at saving this fast-disappearing species. Thanks to conservation drives, these monkeys now number close to 2500. The diversity of woodland landscape this lush forest covers is truly incredible. It includes a tidal water-washed area between the Uzi and Chwaka Island bays, teeming with mangrove trees and other marine vegetation. The woodland itself is sited in an ancient coral bed that creates a shallow depression with coral rag forests and thick bushes covering the higher ground around it. There are also sand marshes that lie to the north of the forest. At the bay, you will be able to view distinct varieties of colorful fish in the water along with crabs and mollusks. There is also on-site turtle sanctuary initiated by the local community.

A highlight of your flora tour, your guide will take you to see the Mama Mtondoo, a stately mahogany tree that is believed to be more than 200 years old. Then, there are the fascinating twins, one strangler fig, and the other sycamore, growing together. You could also view a raffia fern tree that has the distinction of sporting the largest leaves in the world. Together, this landscape supports a stunning variety of flora that in turn hosts more than 100 species of butterflies. You will be awestruck to see that few of these can be as big as a human hand. You can also view millipedes, lizards and amphibians like frogs. Look out for the brilliantly colored sunbirds as they flit among the elegant tropical flowers, sipping nectar from them. Follow the forest trails when on your adventure tour of Zanzibar and you can watch other creatures such as sykes monkey, shrew, galago, chameleon and many more. If you are lucky, you may even spot a traversing shy Ader’s duiker or suni antelope. Originally, the reserve was set up with the support of international organizations but now a major part of the revenue earned from park entrance fees is used for a wide range of preservation initiatives from replanting trees to educating communities about the importance of conservation. Do your bit in preserving this unique and fragile ecosystem by visit this rare primate world on your Zanzibar trip.

Your Stone Town tour of Zanzibar with Swahili Tribe Tours will be marked by many moments of wonder as you view the charms of this old metropolis that has retained its essence, but also has favorably, albeit cautiously embraced the elements of modernization. Every nuance of its vibrant history is evident in the beautiful buildings, some that whisper about the Omani advent in Zanzibar and others that speak about the origins of Swahili architecture fused with a Persian Shirazi influence. The narrow streets are lined with many residential houses that preserve their original Swahili-Omani themes with exquisitely carved doorways with metal studs, overhanging balconies and latticed windows. Side by side, you will see churches that are evidently continental due to the colonial presence and the many mosques commissioned by the olden Sultans of Zanzibar. Step into the House of Wonders and visit the 17th-century built fort. You could also check out the one-time slave market that Zanzibar was repentantly renowned for. To lay your finger on the pulse of the old town, you must take a walking tour through its enchanting labyrinth alleyways. Begin your journey of exploration of Zanzibar’s market where locals buy just about any perishable from reaped fishes just from the deep waters to recently harvested vegetables and outlandish fruits like shoki-shoki (rambutan), custard apple, durian, fenesi and bungo to name a few.

With the taste of the flavors still on your tongue to sample the fruits, head out to the Anglican Church that was built to bond religious gaps and in celebration of the end of all traces of the slave trade. Its foundations stand at the exact location where slaves were traded and the church altars were built in place of the whipping pole that stood in the slave bazaar. Here, you will learn that the Sultan of Zanzibar abolished slavery in 1873 in a treaty with its commercial partner in slavery, the British Empire, as a result of the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 under English law. Next, your well-informed Swahili Tribe Tours guide will lead you to Sultan’s Palace Museum (Beit-al-Sahel) and House of Wonders (Beit-al-Ajaib) that houses a collection of personal items from the royal rulers of Zanzibar. Go on to the Tippu Tip’s House, Africa House that was once a British Club, the Old Fort, Khoja Shia Ithna-Asheri Jamaat Dispensary and Forodhani Gardens. End your journey on this leg of your cultural and historical vacation in this part of Africa with a souvenir extravaganza at the small stores along the narrow streets and haggle for delicate jewelry, distinct Swahili clothing, hand-carved curios and paintings
